Ram Devanathan

Director of the Energy Processes and Materials Division in the Energy & Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Dr. Ram Devanathan, PhD, is the Director of the Energy Processes and Materials Division in the Energy & Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He stewards capabilities in energy storage, catalysis, carbon capture and utilization, waste-to-biofuel conversion, advanced manufacturing, and hydrogen production and storage. He is passionate about advancing the clean energy revolution through data-driven decarbonization.

Dr. Devanathan is a recipient of the Department of Energy’s Outstanding Mentor Award for his efforts to involve high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in computational materials science and is a recipient of the American Ceramic Society’s Richard M. Fulrath Award. He has mentored local elementary and middle school students in Math Counts and First Lego League Robotics. Devanathan is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Oppenheimer Science and Energy Leadership Program.

Dr. Devanathan earned a PhD in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University and an MBA from Washington State University. He serves as an active volunteer in the American Chemical Society, Materials Research Society, and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society. His technical interests include the design of materials for extreme environments, tritium production for national security needs, selective molecular and ion transport through membranes, integrated computational materials engineering, and machine learning for materials discovery.
