Could ‘artificial’ knees be a thing of the past? CWRU researchers attempt to grow living joints

Ozan Akkus, the Kent Hale Smith Professor of Engineering and a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Case School of Engineering, discussed a new research project focusing on engineering, growing and commercializing “live” replacement joints to provide 40 patients with knee replacements using “live joints,” or biocompatible bone and cartilage grown from human cells that can restore natural function to the joint within five years.
